If you're been paying any attention to Calgary's house music scene of
late, there's a good chance you've already heard - or at least heard of
- Isis Graham. Having spent the better part of the past decade
knee-deep in Calgary's house music community, slogging it out behind
the decks at dance parties and clubs around the city, this diminutive
discotheque diva has well and truly earned her keep, and is now on the
verge of taking her sound global with the release of her first single
with musical partner Neighbour on the American house imprint Alphabet
Music.
As the daughter of a radio DJ and blues singer whose
first introduction to public performance was figure skating as a child,
Isis' attraction to all things rhythmic and musical was obvious from a
young age. She began crawling through the family record collection and
making her own mix tapes by the age of seven, and by the time she made
it to her first dance party in her early teens, she was hooked.
Isis
bought her turntables in 1999 and never looked back. Before long, she
began to make her name known on Calgary's club circuit. Needless to
say, word traveled quickly, and before long Isis found her sounds and
services very much in demand not just in Calgary but all over; from
Vancouver to Toronto, from Fernie B.C to Washington D.C. Fast forward
eight years, and Isis has found herself to be one of Calgary's hottest
house music commodities and exports.
In 2003, Isis made the
shift from playing records to writing music, and has been incorporating
her original productions into her sets - including a number of songs
where, in addition to production duties, she also performs some of the
vocals. "It's all for fun and for the love for me, I do this because it
makes ME happy, truth be told I wanna be on the dancefloor too." she
says which once you meet her you will know is true - January 2008.
